Are you interested in DJing at MLX7?

Australia’s longest-running lindy exchange is looking for music. A whole lot of ass-kickin' music.

Have you got what we’re looking for?

If you’re interested in DJing at MLX7, we’re offering:
- paid sets of at least one hour (usually longer)
- free entry to your event
- both evening and late night sets

We're interested in DJs for lindy hop, blues and balboa dancing, and for our 'unswing' (as in anything that's great for dancing but isn't swinging jazz) BSides sets.
We will, however, give preference to DJs with Exchange or large swing dancing event experience, though we will accept at least six months experience DJing at local events.

If you can’t offer us that, we are prepared to haggle.

Interested?

Please send an email to DJ [at] mlx-7 [dot] com which includes:
1) Your contact details (phone, email and postal address);
2) How long you’ve been dancing;
3) Your DJing preferences and the dates and times when you will not be able to DJ;
4) A brief description of your experience as a DJ;
5) A brief description of your musical interests;
⇒	all in 500 words or less. We will request a digital photo of you if we offer you a set, so if you have one on hand already…

PLEASE NOTE:
Interest in DJing at MLX is usually very high, and we have only limited spots available. Please register your interest early.
BUT
Please also be aware that we are not able to accept every DJ’s application. We will be careful to select DJs who best suit the requirements of our events. Application does not automatically assure you a set at MLX7.

Sound picky? We sure are

We want to maintain the MLX’s reputation for providing the very best DJing Australia can offer.
But if you have questions, please drop us a line – we are happy to talk and work with you to find the best solution.
If you’re interested, but not sure you have what it takes, please feel free to contact us. We want to encourage new and interested DJs, and we’re happy to drop in and check out your set at a local Melbourne venue or one of the many other exchanges and camps on this year, or to talk about how to get your DJing action up and ready by November.

What is a lindy exchange?

A Lindy Exchange is a lindy hop (swing dance) event where dancers in one city host a weekend of social dancing, inviting dancers from all over the world to come and share their local venues and bands. Hosting is a big lindy exchange tradition, where locals give visitors a place to stay in their own homes.

But really, it's an excuse to party like it's 1939: dancing, dancing and more dancing. With some time set aside for talking and eating (naptimes are optional).

So what's MLX7?

MLX7 is the 7th annual Melbourne Lindy Exchange. MLX7 (as with MLX5 and MLX6) is a non-profit event, run entirely at cost to save you $$. We've themed this year the 'Kick Ass' exchange because we think this year's MLX is the best, ass-kickingest MLX so far.

Do you have to be able to dance to come?

Of course not - we are running early evening events which feature live bands and (limited) seating. Come along and enjoy the music! But remember: dancing is the main focus of the weekend, and we've chosen venues with excellent dance floors... and only small seating areas.

Do you have to be a good dancer to come?

No way - we welcome all dancers, no matter how much experience they have, or how 'good' they are. It'll help if you can do a swing out or a bit of 6-count, but all you'll really need is to be able to say "would you like to dance?"

Many of the Australian cities organise group trips to MLX (and other exchanges) which are made up of dancers with all sorts of experience and dancing abilities. Why not organise a group of friends and come together if you're a bit shy? But exchanges are all about meeting and dancing with strangers: many people arrive knowing nobody and leave with dozens of new friends from all over the world!

Are there any lessons or workshops?

Nu-uh: this is an entire weekend of nothing but social dancing.
If you are interested in classes, Melbourne is home to literally dozens of swing dance teachers, and there'll be plenty more flying into town for the weekend who might be interested in teaching private classes. To make contact with them, try the Australian Swing Talk discussion board

Is there anything to do at MLX7 besides dancing?

You bet - we're organising all sorts of non-dancing and daytime activities, from visits to local scenic spots to meals and shopping trips.
The welcome drinks venue is traditionally packed with backpacks and excited dancers catching up with old friends and making new ones.
These are always very friendly events - we always recommend them to out-of-towners and new dancers, as they give them a chance to meet people before the main dancing events, and give old exchange buddies a chance to catch up. They are usually casual, friendly, noisy events.
We've already had lots of help with MLX7 from many people all over Australia, doing all sorts of jobs, from promoting MLX7 in their classes and newsletters (both in Melbourne and interstate), allowing us to promote MLX7 at their classes and dances, producing our MLX7 logo (thanks Scott Fraser), producing postcards and pamphlets (thanks Kylee Thompson), offering advice on public relations (thanks Sally Winter), photocopying material, donating materiels, decorating like demons (thanks Sally Winter), sponsoring MLX7 (thanks Swing Patrol and Gorgeous Gear), running 'special MLX events' (thanks to Madame Dynamite's)...
There are too many things to name - but we appreciate them all!

If you're interested in helping out with official sponsorship, please do drop us a line at questions [at] mlx-7 [dot] com - we appreciate all the help!

MLX7 is truly the work of a vast team of people - local, interstate and international. We're very grateful for all the help they've given so far and are very proud to announce MLX7 as the seventh annual Melbourne Lindy Exchange, brought to you by the MJDA!

Hosting

Registration for MLX7 hosting will open on the 10th September 2007.

Hosting questions?

If you want to enquire about hosting at MLX7, contact us by emailing hosting [at] mlx-7 [dot] com.

Who can be hosted at MLX7?

We offer hosting to all guests who are registered MLX7 pass holders. But we're happy to have any local Melbourne person register as a host.

So what's hosting all about?

Hosting visitors and being hosted by locals is a long standing tradition with the MLX and lindy exchanges around the world. It's part of the exchange spirit to offer a bed for a visitor, and to know they'll 'exchange' the favour when you come to visit in their city.
Hosting is also kind to the shoestring budget. Hosted visitors not only save valuable money (that can be spent on presents or beer or dancing) when they stay with locals, they also make lasting friendships and learn a lot more about the city they're visiting. Hosts, in turn, often find that having a houseguest for an exchange makes the weekend just that little bit more fun.

What do hosts do?

Locals simply offer a bed (or mattress or airbed or couch) to visiting dancers. The usual deal for visitors is that they're offered somewhere to sleep (with or without bedding), somewhere to wash, a basic breakfast and tips on how to get around.
Hosts aren't expected to host their guests for any longer than the length of the exchange itself, though they may choose to do so. It's a good idea to discuss this before the exchange weekend.
Hosts with cars usually drive their guests to events with them. Hosts using public transport either tip their guest off on who to hit for lifts, or they take them with them on the tram (for more information about travelling around Melbourne, consult the MLX7 travel page).
It's a good idea for hosts to confirm their guest's travel plans and arrival/departure times as soon as possible.
Hosts should also read the what do guests do? section as well.

What do guests do?

Guests are usually expected to tidy up after themselves, respect their host's space and buy them a couple of drinks (or lovely presents) in gratitude. We ask you to only use your host's phone and internet access if it is offered. It's often a good idea to invest in a pre-paid phone card before you arrive.
Guests should also read the what do hosts do? section as well.

How much further you go is entirely up to you. But particularly good hosts and houseguests soon gain a reputation on the exchange circuit, and are very popular come registration time.
Particularly bad house guests and hosts also gain a reputation.

Other Accomodation Options

I'm not keen on being hosted, where can I stay?

There is a range of places to stay in Melbourne, particularly in the inner city areas where we're holding our events.
You can find out about hostels at hostelz.com. Past MLX visitors have had kind words for the Nunnery hostel in Fitzroy.
Consult the Visit Melbourne accommodation guide for other accommodation types, or check wotif.com for information about last-minute and other accomodation.

To Melbourne

Plane

Consult this site for information about flying to Melbourne from overseas.

Fly from within Australia on the premium national airline Qantas or with the budget airline Virgin Blue. Fly from most cities to Melbourne with the budget airline Jet Star.

Fly into the main Melbourne airport Tullamarine (22kms north of the CBD), or into the less convenient-for-the-city Avalon airport.
Travel from Tullamarine to the city by:
a) posh option: taxi (expect to pay around $40 into the city);
b) mid-range option: the cheap and efficient Skybus, which offers free connections from Spencer Street station to most major hotels ($15 one-way/ $24 return - you can also purchase a 'Skybus Metcard' daily or 2-hourly ticket for use on metropolitan trams, trains and buses - $21 and $18 respectively); or
c) shoe-string option: try posting on the Swing Talk Board to scab a lift with someone.

Train and Bus

Catch the train or Coach from most major cities into Melbourne's Spencer Street Station. From here, you can catch any one of a number of metropolitan buses, trains or trams.

Ferry

The ferry between Tasmania and the mainland leaves from Devonport in Tasmania and arrives in Port Melbourne in Melbourne.

Around Melbourne

Hire cars

The usual range of hire car providers are available in Melbourne, though the rent-a-bomb company is usually the cheapest.

Public Transport

The Melbourne tram, bus and rail network is easy to negotiate, and the trams which cover the inner-city extensively are Melbourne icons.
Visitors should be aware that ticket machines onboard trams only accept coins and that the drivers carry no change and cannot advise on ticketing issues. They will, however, assist with route advice.

The Metlink website gives full details about travelling on public transport in Melbourne. The local area maps are particularly useful. The Metcard site gives full information about ticketing costs and types.

Ticketing varies between zones. Travellers may purchase two-hourly, daily and city saver tickets onboard buses and trams and at train stations. There are a range of other tickets (including Weekly tickets, and Sunday Savers which are only $2.50 for all-day travel in any zone, on any tram, train or bus on a Sunday) and packs of tickets (including 5 and 10 packs of daily or 2-hour tickets) available from retail outlets, metshops and train stations.

Most public transport services finish at around midnight, though there is a limited night rider bus service which services some routes after midnight.

Scabbing a lift

In the best spirit of shoe string budgeting, you may manage to 'scab' - borrow - a lift with a local to and between venues. The best way to do this is by asking at an event, or by posting on the busy Australian Swing Talk board. Chocolate will usually get you a long way on this route.

The MJDA

MLX5, MLX6 and MLX7 are all Melbourne Jazz Dance Association projects. The MJDA is a non-profit organisation devoted to the preservation and promotion of vernacular jazz dance and music in Melbourne, Australia.

Founded in 2005, the MJDA began with its first event, the fifth annual Melbourne Lindy Exchange - MLX5: the Shoestring Exchange. The MLX5 theme reflected not only the MJDA's budget for the event, but also their commitment to providing affordable, quality social swing dancing events in Melbourne.

In 2006 the MJDA followed the success of the Shoestring Exchange with MLX6: the Fat Lotta Good Exchange.

This year the MJDA takes the Melbourne Lindy Exchange to a new level with more live music, more DJs and more hardcore dancing, yet still keeping the cost of individual events and passes very low.

The MJDA was founded by Sam Carroll, Di King, Brian Renehan, Wendy Rehehan and Darren Witt but welcomes new members, encouraging them to make contact for more information.

MLX7 organising team

This year's MLX is run by the MJDA and steered by Wendy, Di, Sam, Keith, Jill, Fiona, Dan, Jennifer and Marybeth.
Additional help is provided by a team of volunteers, sponsors and 'consultants', without whom this exchange could not be run.

Sam Carroll

Sam began swing dancing in Brisbane in 1999, and has travelled all over Australia and overseas trying to get someone to dance with her. She's been pushing lindy on people since 2001, helping to organise events like Melbourne's weekly Ballyhoo, annual Easter Hop and the inaugural Australian Hellzapoppin' Prize. She was in at the start with MLX, volunteering in 2001 and organising in 2002. But in 2005 Brian, Wendy, Di and Darren convinced her that partying all weekend long on the social dance floor would be far more fun than running classes, and they held the first all-social dancing Melbourne Lindy Exchange: MLX5. The same group founded the MJDA to run the whole thing.

Jill Carter

Jill is a relative newcomer to swing dancing having started dancing in mid 2006, however she soon became mildly obsessed with the dance, the music and 40's fashion and has since danced her way across several states including the united states. Fortunately she has recently stopped counting to 8 in her sleep and practicing shorty george's in the lift lobby (too many funny looks from work colleagues) so she decided to put her spare time towards doing something useful like helping organise MLX. It's Jill's first MLX and she can't wait for 4 days of non stop dancing!!!

Fiona Creedy

Fiona started swing dancing in 2002 and attended her first MLX in that year. While living and working in London in 2005-06, she was fortunate enough to experience a small taste of the international swing scene at the London Balboa Festival and London Lindy Exchange. MLX7 is her first excursion into the world of organising swing events and she is honoured to be part of this year's kick-ass committee.

Keith Hsuan

A relative newcomer to the swing scene, Keith started dancing in 2004. He quickly got involved, volunteering at SwingCity Melbourne six months after learning his first swingout. Since then, he's volunteered at a variety of swing events, including MLX5 and the inaugural Melbourne Swing Festival. In his other life, Keith has been involved with running many other clubs, organising many successful events along the way.

Dianne King

Dianne has been swing dancing since 2000. She has traveled throughout Australia to dance and has been a big part of MLX from the start. She has been managed registrations for all previous MLX's, in 2005 taking on the role of managing not only registrations but also the workshops for Swing City. She was one of the main organisers for MLX5 and MLX6. She is wondering if she is slightly insane in volunteering again this year, but is surrounded by such a great group of people that she is confident that it will all turn out for the best.

Jennifer Makin

After too many years working in Cambodia (a.k.a. “the country that rhythm forgot”), Jen returned to Melbourne in late 2006 and immediately took up swing dancing. She likes lists, and ticking things off them, and was therefore a natural for the position of MLX7 registrations lackey.

Dan Ng

G'day. I'm Dan, aka 'PommyDan' probably because I spent the last few years in London dancing my (stripey) socks off. During my Lindy Travels I met and danced with lovely people across Europe, the US and Canada. I've also been involved with organising the London Lindy Exchange for 2006 and more so for 2007. So I'm hoping some of this experience might be useful in making MLX7 a success.
I'm a big fan of making the Melbourne lindy scene as inclusive as possible - I love dancing with and meeting all types of people! And I can't tell you how excited I am to be helping with this Exchange in my home city - it'll be my very first MLX!

Wendy Renehan

Wendy can't resist getting involved in organsing one of the best social swing dancing events of the year, MLX. Each year presents a challenge to explore new avenues in bands and venues and events to make MLX the best social event it can be. She has volunteered at all seven MLX's, including managing the very successful late night 'rent party' in 2003 and occupying a key coordinatory role in 2005 and 2006. With her partner Brian, she founded the social dancing event Diga Diga Doo which ran fortnightly in 2003 and 2004. Wendy started swing dancing in Melbourne in 2000 and has really, really enjoyed dancing all around Australia and internationally. Her favourite events are exchanges with the warm welcome of the locals of that place, the chance to mix and dance with people from all over the world, to hear new bands and explore a new places.

Marybeth Yanosh

Sexy vegetarian (who has a thing for Mexican food) who refuses to hear excuses about why it's not practical to go anywhere, and sings to herself in the presence of others with reckless abandon!
Oh yeah, started dancing with the Hawaii Jitterbugs, now dances in Melbourne where ever she can swing for free

Melbourne Lindy Exchange

The first Melbourne Lindy Exchange was run in 2001 by Matthew Riddle and a team of volunteers and featured workshops taught local and international teachers. The second Melbourne Lindy Exchange - MLX: Get On The Floor - was held the following year, again run by a team of volunteers with Matt Riddle and featuring both local and international teachers, yet this time hosting the first annual Australian Hellzapoppin' prize, whose goal was to provide funds for Australian dancers to attend the first Hellzapoppin' competition in the USA. The third MLX - MLX: Harlem Comes to Melbourne - was again a volunteer-run event, this time seeing Matt's partner Lotte Geldoff involved as a key organiser, and featured workshops with international teachers. In 2004 the Melbourne Lindy Exchange was run in conjunction with Swing City over a week, and again featured a host of volunteers and organisers, and showcased both local and international teachers and musicians.

The 2005 Melbourne Lindy Exchange was steered by the MJDA as MLX5: the Shoe String Exchange, and in 2006 as the MLX6: the Fat Lotta Good Exchange. MLX7: the Kick Ass Exchange is the third MJDA-run Melbourne Lindy Exchange.
